on manganaro’s grosseria’s last day. on Flickr.
One of the reasons I walked all the way to the Hell’s Kitchen yesterday was because I found out that Manganaro’s was closing. Walking by the old Grosseria, the place was practically empty with the owners staring at me as I snapped pictures. I bet they were saying “the place is a-good enough to take-a the pictures but not a-good for you to get-a the sandwich?” I’ve heard many stories about their famously awful service, but even more so about the insane family feud between them and the owners of Hero Boy next door.

eisenberg’s sandwich shop. on Flickr.
A few years ago, I worked practically across the street from Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop on Fifth Avenue between 22nd and 23rd Streets in the Flatiron District. It’s one of those places that is charmingly frozen in time, that hasn’t really changed much. The food is straightforward and classic - I used to rely on their grilled cheese sandwiches, which were a perfect slice of comfort food. Oh, and don’t forget to get an egg cream while you’re at it.
A classic luncheonette like this is so rare these days - it’s an endangered species. Even the term itself, “luncheonette” is long gone from common vernacular.
