behind the counter. waverly diner. greenwich village. on Flickr.
The Waverly Diner reopened a couple of months ago after a big renovation and expansion, and it still looks like a classic diner. I’m pretty happy they kept the old lighting fixtures and an old restaurant feel (thankfully, they didn’t do the faux retro look that screams tacky). The only thing I can say was that there seems to quite a jump in the prices. Here’s a shot of the staff.

at the dig inn. madison avenue. on Flickr. For lunch, I really wanted something wholesome today. Nothing crappy. Not my usual soup from the deli. Something different. Refreshing. And no, not the same boxed sandwich from Pret (while very good, it’s not exactly filling). I was so incredibly tired this morning from shutting my alarm off & sleeping a whopping hour late. I needed comfort food, but I didn’t want bad, fatty, gross comfort food. I’ve been curious about Dig Inn since transforming themselves from Pump Energy - a place I was way too intimidated to try since all I kept envisioning was Hans and Franz going to pump (clap) you up. Dig Inn is quite a bit different from its predecessor, and has a more relaxed and comforting approach. You pick your protein, grain or green, and get three side, plus sauce if you wish. I had rosemary turkey with brown rice, carrots, mushrooms, and potatoes with watercress. The place also gets a bit busy, but is very efficient.

knish nosh. forest hills. on Flickr.Knish Nosh on Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills is a staple. The good old fashioned knish is what you get here. I remember when I was a student at Queens College, they used to sell these knishes exclusively in what was known as the “Kosher Caf.” These are the big, dense knishes - NOT the kind you get from a hot dog vendor off the street. One of these babies will sit in your tummy and fill you up!

behind the counter, peter pan donuts. on Flickr.Every single time I find myself in Greenpoint for as long as I can remember, there are two places that I usually must stop by: Peter Pan Bakery for doughnuts and Christina’s for pierogi.
On Sunday, I happened to be in Greenpoint with my boyfriend and we had to stop into Peter Pan for a doughnut. These are some of the best doughnuts in the city, and if you add an interior that is delightfully frozen in time, complete with waitresses in teal and pink smocks, it just adds to the experience. Since it was warm out, we decided to get vanilla egg creams with our doughnuts, which added to that nostalgic vibe. Aside from the prices, nothing really has changed at Peter Pan, and that’s perfectly alright by me.

grand central: metro north booth on Flickr. This weekend, for the first time in MTA history, the entire system shut down ahead of time in preparation of a weather emergency. Last night, the announcement was made that service would be restored on the subways and much of the LIRR, but because of significant damage, all three Metro North lines are suspended.
This morning, Grand Central which is usually buzzing with a constant flow of people, was practically empty. Reverse commuters who typically go up to White Plains or Stamford were left stranded with no way to get to work this morning. So far, the MTA doesn’t know when service will be restored.
