sand bar, rockaway beach on Flickr.
The Sand Bar at the end of Beach 116 St is a dive bar with cheap, standard beach eats. The whole menu there is pretty much fried food, and the bar area (at least at the time I went) was a bit on the sad side. At this particular stretch of the beach, there are a bunch of bums and in some aspect, it reminds me of Coney Island circa 20 years ago in terms of the vibe. Sure, the Rockaways (in other stretches) are now attracting the hipsters, but this stretch remains a bit removed from all that, giving a “frozen in time” feel that you don’t get in other areas. Because it was the hottest day of the year when I made my trip, I really didn’t spend any time walking around. I pretty much got off the bus, bought a new pair of shades, ate a hot dog, attempting walking, but when sweat escaped every pore of my body, I decided it was time to make my return home to air conditioning.
