The Eldridge Street Synagogue is the first Jewish synagogue built in the US by Eastern European Jews. It opened in 1887, and was filled up during services due to the large Jewish population on the Lower East Side. This particular section of the Lower East Side is now part of Chinatown, but the synagogue has been restored and serves as a museum.
