As you head south on 71st/Continental Avenues, just past Austin Street and under the LIRR tracks, you enter a whole new world. The streets are private (but open to thru traffic, you just can’t park there without a permit), and the house numbers are not in the typical Queens fashion where addresses are hyphenated. It’s quiet, and the homes, townhouses, and apartment buildings make you wonder if you’ve left the city for a quiet English village. As a matter of fact, the Gardens are one of the country’s first planned communities, and dates back to 1908. The lush landscapes were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., son of the infamous Frederick Law Olmstead, designer of Central and Prospect Parks.
