waiting for the q27 in the rain. main street, flushing. on Flickr.
I have a long history with the Q27. It’s the bus that would take me from the apartment I grew up in to Main Street, Flushing. The actual location of the bus stop that would take me back to Bayside has changed much like Main Street has since the late 80s when I first started hanging out here in high school In high school, I’d take the bus just so I could go to The Wiz to spend my allowance on cassettes. My entire Depeche Mode collection was (for the most part) bought at this store. My friends from High School (I went to Cardozo, but I had friends at other schools, too) used to hang out at the Burger King (which was across the street from its current location). I used to go to Woolworth’s, Alexanders, Bang Bang. All these places are long gone. While the neighborhood had a strong Asian presence back then, it’s even more pronounced now. The old Alexanders (which became a crappy flea market mall, then Caldor) which was vacant for about a decade is now the New World Mall which caters to this population.
